Melissa’s Story
It was the evening of the 28th February, I was watching Below Deck with my husband (our favourite tv programme) when I felt my first proper surge. I remember thinking ok, we are ready, I am ready for my baby to make an appearance into the world. I had prepared myself by having a hypnobirthing playlist, essential oils and I had practiced my hypnobirthing techniques.
I was already 5 days ‘late’ (I say late like this because I think sticking to 1 due date is a little crazy but I am not an expert) and the midwives had already tried to ‘book me in for a sweep’ which I had declined. ‘ My baby will come when they’re ready’ I thought to myself. And he did.
So after my first surge, I took to using my yoga ball and concentrating on my balloon breathing when I was experiencing said surges. I found it very manageable.
That night I was able to get some sleep with my husband sleeping like a baby next to me. The surges went on for the next day intermittently. I passed my mucous plug and I felt able to go for a walk. I surrounded myself with lots of positivity, reading my affirmations, visualising my happy places and staying very calm throughout.
That evening we went to bed and around 3 am, after continuing to use my breathing techniques and listen to my playlist throughout the surges as they intensified and became closer together; I decided now was the time we needed to call the birth unit. I was filled with anticipation and excitement. I was finally going to meet the little person I had grown with my body.
The car journey was intense and after a few strong words with my husband about how he was driving, we made it to the labour ward. They put me in triage and told me I was still in early labour. I think it was because I was so calm and controlled and breathing my way through the surges. However, a noise came from me which seemed to cause the midwives to spring into action. They finally examined me and to their surprise I was fully dilated!
With that I taken in a wheelchair down to the unit, where I immediately took to the birth pool. After what only felt like a few minutes in the birth pool, they told me I was a little ‘too relaxed’ and that I needed to get out to push. I remember thinking it was very funny that they thought I was relaxed.
With that, I tried out a few positions but the one that worked for me was actually turned slightly to one side but laying down. I remember the midwives saying that they ‘don’t normally like woman to push for over two hours’ which I had apparently been doing but I thought to myself ‘surely every woman has to be treated as individuals’. Within a few pushes after that they were able to see the head; one push later he was out! Using just my feather and birth breath. I remember thinking it’s a mindset, I CAN do it and I was determined to have the least medical intervention possible. I genuinely was amazed by my body!
He was here! Born on 2nd March 2021 at midday. I had done it and I felt elated and was so overcome with emotions and joy. The midwives complimented me on my strength and calmness throughout which gave me even more strength within myself.
Baby number two came 4 years 2 months later. Very similar birth story but labour was only 6 hours compared to over 30 hours. Using the same hypnobirthing techniques and in the same birth centre.
Both birth experiences I found absolutely life changing and incredible. I honestly didn’t know I had the level of strength within myself to give birth with zero pain relief just by using the water, movement, breathing a surrounding myself with positivity.
I really hope more and more people share positive birth experiences so birthing is not something to be feared but celebrated! Woman’s body’s are incredible!
Jay’s Story
During my pregnancy, I wanted to step into the unknown feeling as informed, supported and prepared as possible. After searching for pregnancy yoga classes, I found Yoga with Amber and I’m so grateful that I did.
Each session with Amber gave me a safe, supportive environment to move my body and connect with my baby. Amber created a warm and welcoming space where I felt comfortable sharing my thoughts and feelings throughout pregnancy. Listening to other mums further along in their journeys also helped me feel more prepared and aware of the different experiences that can arise.
My husband and I also attended a hypnobirthing course with Amber, which gave us both the tools and confidence to approach labour calmly and positively. Having practical strategies to draw upon, and knowing my husband could actively support me throughout, made such a difference during labour and birth.
My birth preference was to give birth in the MLBU with as little intervention as possible. In the end, my waters broke and our daughter didn’t arrive within 24 hours, meaning I gave birth in the delivery suite following an oxytocin induction. I was surrounded by an incredible team of midwives who understood how important the MLBU experience was to me and did everything they could to create a calm, supportive environment that reflected that. I will always be grateful for the exceptional care I received. The techniques and strategies I learned through Yoga with Amber and the hypnobirthing course were invaluable in helping me stay calm, confident, and adaptable when my birth plan changed.
Thank you, Amber, for your incredible support during one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Your guidance helped me approach birth with confidence, flexibility and trust in myself.
Esther’s Story
My birth began with an induction for medical reasons. I decided to have an epidural because I had been told that inductions can sometimes be more painful. There was a wait on the ward before I could have the epidural, so I found the hypnobirthing techniques really useful for that part of early labour. I also used the hypnobirthing breathing techniques for the placement of the epidural, and for active labour itself - it made me feel in control and made the whole birth process a really positive experience. I think it's important for people to know that hypnobirthing doesn't just have to be used in one particular situation - it can be useful for any kind of birth that you end up having.
Emma’s Story
I just wanted to let you know that I had my baby boy last Monday! I was 5 days past my due date with baby measuring 'big', they offered me a sweep on my due date but I felt confident enough to decline, and I'm glad I did!
I went into labour very quickly around 4:30am Monday morning, the contractions were very intense and close together from the beginning and all the breathing techniques from yoga and the birthing toolkit were invaluable!
We got to hospital around 7:00am, I was in the MLBU at 7:20, and our baby was out at 7:35!! There was no time for the antibiotics (for my Group B Strep) or any kind of pain relief, but I did have my birthing comb, which helped alongside the other techniques.
It all happened so quickly but knowing what was happening, using the different breathing techniques, repeating my affirmations, and trusting/moving with my body meant that although it was all happening before I was mentally ready, I felt strong and confident.
Kate's Story
I’ve had two babies in the last three years and am fortunate enough to say that both experiences have been really positive. Throughout both pregnancies I attended Amber’s pregnancy yoga as yoga has always been a necessity for me; it makes me feel connected and present with my body which during labour and birth was incredibly important! Pregnancy yoga quickly became a beautiful space to be present with my baby and to connect with other pregnant women too.
With my first baby, my daughter was born in the MLBU naturally using a tens machine as relief and although this was in my birthing wish list, there were certain aspects that made the birth more stressful than I would have liked. I went to the hospital too early and was sent home after my labour dramatically slowed and it was this start and stop nature that made the process feel even longer and more tiring. I also had a midwife at the time who was new to midwifery and was convinced that because my breathing techniques kept me in a really calm head space that my labour wasn’t as established as it was. With threats to be moved to delivery suite they decided to do an internal check and once she’d discovered I was 9cm dilated it was suddenly time to push! This definitely added to the stress as I didn’t want to be moved and felt pressured to act quickly which just didn’t feel like a very safe space at the time. But that said, the room itself at the MLBU was lovely and definitely felt less clinical than a normal hospital room.
In contrast, my second birth at home was the exact opposite. We called the home birth team early to let them know my labour had started and was progressing and they arrived within the hour. It was so different in comparison to my first birth because although they were present throughout, they very much felt like a reassuring background figure rather than being pressured to ‘perform’ within a certain amount of time. I was at home in my living room with my soothing lights and music playlist and it just felt like I was in a safe space to just let my body do what it needed to. The midwives were also incredibly good and their experience and knowledge were so helpful. At one point they could tell that baby was low in my pelvis but not quite in the right position and so they helped me to get baby’s head in the right position through movement and he was honestly born minutes after!
I also did hypnobirthing with Amber on my second pregnancy, as I felt like it would be really useful to have a refresher on birthing tools and techniques. We went through visualisations as well as breathing exercises which definitely helped me stay centred during the tougher contractions. I didn’t use pain relief for my second birth at all and only an oramorph painkiller on my first birth but I think this was all down to the breathing techniques that pregnancy yoga and hypnobirthing helped to encourage. It really opened my eyes into the world of empowered births and the ability to choose what was right for me as a person and my baby. And I’m now left with amazing memories of having my second baby at home, eating cheese and crackers on the sofa after and heading to my own bed later that night :-)
